Get off the beaten path

Kent Downs is well known for its four beautiful valleys, the Darent Valley, the Stour Valley, the Elham Valley and the Alkham Valley. Visitors will be able to discover the entirety of this beautiful landscape but also the heritage of the Kent Downs. There’s plenty to keep you occupied on a visit, particularly if you enjoy the experience of being totally immersed in nature. The diverse wildlife and habitats certainly make it a worthy landscape for national protection. Kent Downs is the eighth largest AONB and covers 33% of Kent’s land area providing a wealth of opportunities for people to explore and enjoy this outstanding landscape.

You’ll find some superb leafy trails and if you visit during springtime, you’ll be lucky enough to see the beautiful blankets of bluebells which cover the woodlands. Over to the chalk cliffs, you’ll be able to wander along the peaceful trails and eventually pass through tranquil nature reserves where you’re sure to encounter plenty of local wildlife, including deer, owls and red kites. There are even trained North Downs Way ambassadors on-hand to share their top tips, fascinating facts and local knowledge. Whether you’re interested in knowing more about history, mythology, flora, fauna or folklore; there’ll be an ambassador for you to explore the trail with.

Live like a local

You’ll be able to find all kinds of unmissable, sensory, and immersive experiences all year-round, where you can ‘live like a local’ and enjoy your break away sustainably. From finding excellent places to go for a real taste of Kent and trying the finest local produce, to igniting your creative fire and learn how to make traditional rustic wreaths and spectacular floral crowns using woodland materials, or learning the ancient art of mosaic making your very own piece at an old gamekeepers cottage, there truly is something for everyone.

If you’re visiting with little ones, rest assured that you’ll be able to have lots of family fun. You can even take part in the Family Mini Survival Adventure where you’ll be able to learn new skills and work as a team to build shelters and campfires and then cook your own bush tucker on a roaring fire. Another popular experience is with Rebel Farmer, who has created an experience where you can sample incredible organic local produce and learn how to grow your own, all-year-round. And lastly, another wonderful experience on offer is Forest Bathing with Tansy in the Wild which has been developed as a mindfulness practice, connecting you to the beautiful surroundings of Kent Downs through all of your senses.
