The ‘British Columbia Effect’ is the idea that time spent in nature can make you happier, more creative and less stressed. A place rich in diverse wildlife and beautiful backdrops, this is the perfect destination if you want to get off the beaten track and back to what’s important. In this Edenic region, you’ll find some of the world’s most elusive animals, a varied and flourishing landscape and several UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Courtesy of Destination British Columbia and Audley Travel, you could be in with the chance of winning a trip to British Columbia for two people worth £5,000. Read on to find out more about this mesmerising destination, and how to be in with a chance of winning.

Great Bear Rainforest

More than six million hectares stretch 400 kilometres along the central and northern coast of British Columbia from Knight Inlet to the Alaska Panhandle, making the Great Bear Rainforest about the same size as Ireland. This area is so remote, it’s largely only accessible by boat or floatplane – you can’t get much more off the grid than this.

And your reward for trekking to this quiet corner of the earth? The chance to spot an elusive white Spirit Bear, only found in British Columbia. Their neighbours include eagles, grizzly bears, sea otters, dolphins and whales, so although you might be far from human civilisation, you won’t be at a loss for company.

You might feel like you’re a world away from the familiar, but Tweedsmuir Park Lodge near Bella Coola is a warm, historic property with a spectacular setting and all of the comforts of home. Audley Travel recommends it as a great place to stay, where you can peacefully enjoy glimpses of wildlife and views of the 8,000-foot rock peak, aptly named Mount Stupendous.

The Kootenay Rockies

Sitting proudly in the south-eastern corner of the province between the Okanagan and Banff, this region is comprised of several different mountain ranges including the Purcells, Selkirks and Monashees. They might be lesser known than the famed Rocky Mountains, but they’re every bit as incredible as their counterpart, and hold the same UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

Wedged between the craggy mountains are wide, stretching valleys that are home to large numbers of grizzly and black bears, deer, moose and elk, making the area one of the best for spotting these large mammals.

Here, Audley Travel recommends a trip to Kootenay National Park and its surrounding mountain towns. Discover some of the world’s oldest fossils on a walk to Stanley Glacier, or stand on the Continental Divide. Visit traditional mountain towns like Fernie or Nelson, nestled in the heart of the Rockies with downtowns full of heritage buildings, art galleries, coffee shops and restaurants.

Competition time

You could win a superb eight-night trip for two to Canada’s beautiful British Columbia, exploring Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast.
