How to prune your garden to perfection this season

If your outdoor space is in need of a good tidy, GARDENA has all the pruning tools you need to restore it to its former glory

As a passionate gardener, you’ll know how important it is to prune your plants and trees in spring and summer to help encourage new growth. Of course, gardening tasks are always easier when you have the right tool for the job – and that’s where GARDENA comes in.

From secateurs and hedge clippers to loppers and tree pruners, GARDENA has been creating high-quality cutting tools for more than 40 years. So, whatever you have planned for your garden this year, you’ll be able to find a tool for every task in its range.

Not sure where to start? These are GARDENA’s top tips for keeping your outdoor plants both tidy and healthy this season.

Choose the right tool

Just like any gardening job, the tool will vary depending on what you want to achieve. For instance, if you’re dead-heading plants or pruning small, fresh branches, GARDENA’s Bypass SuperCut all-purpose secateurs are perfect. The Bypass blades are designed to glide past each other for a clean, healthy cut that will encourage fresh shoots.

Alternatively, if you’re cutting small, dead branches, you’ll want to use GARDENA’s SuperCut HardWood secateurs. They feature a sharp upper blade and a hardened lower blade, making them ideal for clean cuts on harder wood.

For larger tree branches, however, it has to be GARDENA’s SuperCut pruning loppers. Lightweight and ergonomic, they have a maximum cutting diameter of 35mm and a patented gear transmission that provides up to 38% more power with minimal effort.

Cut with care

Once you’ve chosen your tool, there are various steps you can take to ensure you don’t damage your plants when you prune them. Here are GARDENA’s top four:

• Watch your placement – Always make sure to cut just above the bud to promote fresh growth.

• Angles are key – Generally, it’s best to make cuts at a 45-degree angle to prevent any excess tissue exposure, which can result in rot. This will also help to direct water away from the fresh bud.

• Maintain plant strength – It’s important to prune back any weak or dead growth, as this allows the plant to focus its energy on new, fresh shoots.

• Let the plants breathe – If there’s a lot of dense growth in one concentrated area, it’s wise to thin it out to help promote air circulation around the plant.
