Step 1

Import the cutting files into Canvas Workspace and send to your machine to cut the desired pieces (or download the files onto a memory stick and plug into your machine). Load mat and cut 2 sides then mirror shape and cut 2 more , so you have 4 papercut sides in total.

Step 2

When you have removed your papercut tree sides from the mat, carefully remove the ‘waste’ stars and save them for another project (see Shaker card project).

Step 3

Load mat with metallic paper and cut 4 star toppers.

Step 4

Take 2 papercut panels and place side by side, ensure the stars match at the sides where they will be joined.

Step 5

Add a small amount of clear drying glue down one edge of 1 panel, just use the fine tip of your glue to add adhesive in a small stripe or dabs of glue, where you would like the panels to join.

Step 6

Place the matching panel on top, carefully lining up the cut outs at the edge and press to adhere to create a joined pair of panels.

Step 7

Take the remaining pair of panels and do exactly the same, lining up to match them, before adding glue to join them, check that they will match up with the previous pair. Join to create 2 pairs of panels.

Step 8

Match 1 panel from each pair together, carefully align and join all as before, you will have 3 sides attached now.

Step 9

Join the remaining panels in the same 4 to create a 4 sided papercut tree shape.

Step 10

Take the 4 star topper shapes and fold each down the score lines. Burnish for a crisp fold.

Step 11

Take 1 star topper and add glue to the left point and a little to the left edge of the top point. Leave the other points free from glue.

Step 12

Take another star topper and line up to attach as shown.

Step 13

Add topper number 3 in the same way, carefully lining up.

Step 14

Finally add the last star topper piece to complete the 4 sided star as shown.

Step 15

Add glue to the top point on the 4 sided tree before sliding the star topper in place, adjust until you are happy with position.

Step 16

Now you can glue the remaining points of the star topper to neaten the star shape and secure in place.

Step 17

Optional – Add a Vellum Insert and battery tealight? Cut vellum insert shape using your scan n cut.

Step 18

Mountain fold the Insert at the score lines to create a 4 sided shape with a joining tab.

Step 19

Add a little clear drying glue to the tab.

Step 20

Join to create a 4 sided pyramid shape.

Step 21

Pop vellum insert over a battery operated tealight if desired.

Step 22

Pop the 4 sided papercut tree over the top for an illuminated display!

Top tips

Make some extra stars to add a matching festive flurry to your windows and walls.

Cut an extra side, and snip into the 3D Christmas tree design to release the “hollow” stars, thread some twine through and into a loop for the easiest Christmas tree decorations!

Safety first! Be sure to use a battery operated tealight inside your 3D Christmas tree.

Don’t have any vellum? Raid the kitchen and use greaseproof paper instead.

Try adding different colours of vellum to your 3D Christmas tree for a seasonal stained-glass effect. Colour can be added using ink pads or alcohol markers.
