Lake District

Say hello to your next cycling adventure with komoot

The Lake District is home to some extraordinary cycling spots, from challenging road routes to epic mountain biking trails. There are two main trail centres in the region – Whinlatter and Grizedale – but venture in between and you’ll find miles of incredible bridleway to explore. As England’s largest national park, it’s no surprise why the Lake District has become a go-to cycling destination.

Coniston cycleways

Head to Coniston for a superb network of tracks with different surfaces that will work for you, regardless of what bike you own. Easily accessible, it’s perfect if you want to do a cycling trip with the whole family.

Keppel Cove bridleway

Want to tackle Helvellyn, England’s third-highest mountain? Then check out Keppel Cove bridleway. Zig-zagging through the mountains, it begins with a steady climb before making a sharp ascent that’ll give your legs a real workout. It’s one of the easiest routes if you want to climb Helvellyn, so it’s perfect for less technical riders.

Derwent Water

If you’re looking for really special views, then look no further than Derwent Water, a stunningly beautiful lake nestled right in the heart of the Lake District. Head to the east of the lake for the best spot to capture it on camera.

Loughrigg Terrace

A not-so-hidden gem in the southern Lakes, Loughrigg Terrace is a popular spot in the Lake District for both cyclists and hikers alike. It’s especially worth visiting in the spring for the great displays of bluebells.

Jenny's tips for

cycling in the Lake District

“Venture away from the trail centres and find some amazing bridleways for real Lake District adventures. Also, remember that these are mostly rocky trails, so check your tyre pressure and consider adding more air to prevent punctures.”
