Wales

Say hello to your next cycling adventure with komoot

From breathtaking scenery to friendly locals and lots of cosy pubs… Wales has it all. It’s also the perfect size for a cycling adventure: it’s small enough that you can enjoy seeing the scenery change as you cycle by, but it’s also big and varied enough that it’s a challenge to ride across the lush and varied landscape.

Devil’s Staircase

The Devil’s Staircase is a short, but hellishly steep ascent in Powys, but if you’re not quite up to tackling that, the good news is there is an alternative route that offers a gentler gradient and better road surfaces.

Abergwesyn Common

Looked after by the National Trust, Abergwesyn Common does have a challenging stretch of road, but the payoff is that it offers cinematic views of this beautifully wild and ancient landscape.

Claerddu bothy

Situated just a stone’s throw from Elan Valley, this quaint bothy is the perfect place for basic shelter or rest for the night. It can get very popular in the summer, so it’s best enjoyed in the colder months when it’s quieter.

The Gap

The Gap is a classic mountain biking route that will take you high into the Brecon Beacons. With peaks of around 600m above sea level, you can expect both epic scenery and challenging climbs. Watch out for the tricky ravine halfway up the route!

El's top tips for

cycling in Wales

“If you want to hit the Welsh cycling trails, you should bring an extra granny gear, learn how to open rickety gates and practice some Welsh phrases if you want to impress the locals!

“Be sure to check out the Bryan Chapman Memorial audax. This 600km ride takes you across Wales from end to end and back again in a weekend, passing through Chepstow, the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia along the way.”
